The history of Scotland, shrouded by the mists of time, indicates thename CUMMINGS is a Norman surname. The name appears in Scotland and isinterwoven in the colorful tartan which is an intrinsic part of thehistory of Scotland. Professionalhistorians used such ancientmanuscripts as the Domesday Book (compiled in 1086 by William theConqueror), the Ragman Rolls, the Wace Poem, the Honor Roll of the BattelAbbey, the Curia Regis, Pipe Rolls, the Falaisse Roll, tax records, baptismal, family genealogies, and local parish and church records toestablish that the first record of the name Cummings was found inNorthumberland where they were granted lands by Duke William of Normandy, for their distinguished assistance at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 A.D.Many alternate spellings of the name showed in the manuscriptsresearched. Your name Cummings, occurred in many references, and fromtime to time, the records included variables such as Cummins, Comines,Cummings, Comine, Cummin, Comyn, Cumming, Cummine, Cuming, Cumine, Cumun,Cummyn, Comyn, and many others. Scribes recorded and spelled the name asit sounded. It wasn't unlikely that person would be born with onespelling, married with another, buried with another. The Normans werecommonly believed to be of French origin but more accurately they were ofViking origin. The Vikings landed in the Orkneys and Northern Scotlandabout the year 870 A.D., under their King, Stirgud the Stout. Later, under their Earl, Thorfinn Rollo they invaded France about 940 A.D. TheFrench King, Charles the Simple, after Rollo laid siege to Paris, finallyconceded defeat and granted northern France to Rollo. Duke William whoinvaded and defeated England in 1066, was descended from the first DukeRollo of Normandy. After Distributing the estates of the VanquishedSaxons, many nobles were dissatisfied with their lot. They rebelled. DukeWilliam took an army north and wasted the northerncounties. Many Normannobles fled north and were granted lands over the border in 1070 by KingMalcom Canmore of Scotland. The name Cummings is more properly Cummin, often spelt Comyn. It is a typical Norman nickname, taken no doubt fromthe herb called cummin, which the Concise Oxford English Dictionarydescribes as an "umbelliferous plant like fennel, with aromatic seed" andthen proceeds to relate happily to kummel. The three bundles of plants inthe Cummin Coat-of-Arms, usuallyblazoned as garbs or wheat sheaves, werebundles of Cummin. This unpretentious name, is in fact the most royal inScotland of any that failed to attain the crown. The first Cummin tosettle in Scotland was a powerful Anglo-Norman churchman, acloseconfidant of King David I, under whom he became Chancellor of Scotland in1133. William de Cummin the Chancellor received a grant of land inRoxburgh, also held the Bishopric of Durham by force (against the consentof the chapter) for some three years, but after his nephew William Cumminwas killed in the dispute, he gave up the bishopric in 1144, in returnfor the castle and Honor of Northallerton being given to another nephew,Richard Cummin, ancestor of the Scottish Clan. His nephew Richard hadgreat authority in Scotland, and William, son of Richard, was Justiciaryof Scotland, and in 1210 became Earl of Buchan by marriage with Marjory,Countess of Buchan, only child of Fergus, 1st Earl. William's son by aprevious marriage became Earl of Menteith and acquired the Lordship ofBadenoch by grant from Alexander II. His nephew John, known as the "RedComyn," was father of the "Black Comyn" who was one of the six guardiansof Scotland during the minorityof the Maiden of Norway, and later becamea competitor for the Crown of Scotland. The "Black Comyn" marriedMarjory, Sister of John Balliol, and their son John was known, like hisgrandfather, as the "Red Comyn." The surname Cummings emerged as anotable Scottish Family name in the Country of Northumberland, whereWilliam the Conqueror, allocated the Earldom of Northumberland to RobertDe Comines, from Comminges in Normandy. The badge of the family is theCumin Plant. However, Robert De Comines rule in Northumberland wasuneventful, his violence to the local people became intolerable and hewas killed in 1069. When Richard Comyn, his grandson, came to Scotlandwith King David, he married Hextilda of Tynedale, Granddaughter of KingDonald of Scotland. Richard had a son by this marriage, William, whobecame the Earl of Buchan, but by previous union, William had Richard, who became father of Sir John Comyn, Chief of the Clan. Richard Cummin, lord of Northallerton, married the granddaughter and eventual heiress ofKing Donald III Ban (Shakespeare's "Donaldbane"), the King of Scots whohad been deposed and blinded in 1097. King Donald III's family seem tohave been appanaged in Lochaber and Badenoch atthe expense of theMacWilliams, whose progenit or King Duncan II had been slain by KingDonald. After the overthrow of the MacWilliams in 1230, the Cumminsbecame undisputed Lords Of Badenoch, holding also much of Lochaber andthe "Great Glen".Richard Cummin himself was dead by 1182, and his widowmarried the Earl of Atholl--by whom she was maternal grand-mother ofKelehathonin, probably the local chief called Gillechattan whosedependents, the Clan Chattan of Lochaber and Badenoch, were long at feudover rival land claims with the Cummins. During the thirteenth century, the Cummins became the most powerful and patriotic noble family in allScotland. At this period, the highest rank in Scotland was that of earl, held only by the mightiest cousins of the king or by the heirs of formerlocal kings, and there were only thirteen earldoms altogether. In 1242Alexander Cummin was Earl of Buchan, Walter Cummin was Earl of Menteithand John Cummin was Earl of Angus, all as the result of further marriagesto Celtic dynastic heiresses. So nearly a quarter of the Scottish earlswere Cummins, (see Scotland thirteenth century), and the Cumminsthemselves had come to have as much Celtic as Norman blood (whichscientists now prefer to call genes). From 1270 to 1308 the Cumminendowed the rebuilding of Glasgow Cathedral in those Halcyon days. Theirchief, "the Black Cummin", was one of the Competitors for the Crown ofScotland in 1291--claiming as heirof King Donald III. He married thesister of King John Balliol, who won the competition, and after the muchmaligned King John's forced abdication, this greatly strengthened theroyal claims of his son, "the Red Cummin". These claims led to thedownfall of the Cummins. (Cummings Genealogy,http://www.infomagic.com/~ernie/cumm.htm]
----------
In the first half of the twelfth century, the Comyns were in the vanguardof the Anglo-Norman 'invasion' of the Scottish royal household. WilliamCumin (Comyn), the first member of the family to make an impact inScotland, was chancellor of Scotland from c. 1136. He had been a clerk inthe English chancery of Henry I from c.1121, being a protfollowed hismentor to Durham though he was already archdeacon of Worcester. TheComyns, unlike Bruces, Morevilles and other members of the 'newaristocracy' in Scotland, were not noble families in origin withsubstantial estates in Normandy or northern France. It is probable thatWilliam Cumin belonged to one of the families of clerks which originatedfrom cathedral towns such as Bayeaux and Rouen. From this relativelyobscure clerical and ecclesiastical base, William Cumin soughtto securethe family's secular fortunes in Scotn through his nephews who werealready well established in the Scottish royal court by 1140. Thealliance of mutual self-interest between William Cumin and the Scottishmonarchy was to become a typical feather in the rise of the Comyns.
