Russell Brokaw asposted on the Brokaw Genealogy Forum at GenForum] 2 CONC . 2 CONT Recently new information has come to light concerning the origins of theBrokaw Family at Man 2 CONC nheim and in Europe. This information does not muchalter that already reported by H. Minot Pi 2 CONC tman in the first installmentof his report in The NewYork Genealogical and Biographical Recor 2 CONC d (1955,vol. 86) but it does put Pitman's data in the context of events in Europeand it doe 2 CONC s show that Bourgon Broucard was one of a larger family who hadlived in the "Low Country" (a 2 CONC n historical region roughly congruent withthe late-medieval holdings of the Dukes of Burgund 2 CONC y and in modern timescomprising parts of Belgium, the Netherlands, and northern France). 2 CONT Presumably the ancestors of the Brokaw family--call them BROUCART (2)BROUQUART (2) BROUCARD 2 CONC , BROCART, BRONQUAERT, BROUCARD, BRONCART,BRONCARD, BROUCARD, BRONCARD, BROUCARD, BRONCARD, B 2 CONC ROUCARD (2),BRANCART,BROUCARD (6), BROCARD, BROUCARD (2), BROCARD (2), BROUCARD--forso indivi 2 CONC dual Brokaws are listed--27 spellings in all from about 26records (baptismal, marriage) of th 2 CONC is orthographically challengedfamily...well, now...as I was saying: 2 CONT Presumably our family moved from the Low Country to Mannheim as theprolonged (over generatio 2 CONC ns) result of the Spanish incursion into the LowCountries in the earlier century. Furthermore 2 CONC , in the early 1650s much ofEurope--not least the Palatinate and Mannheim--was just startin 2 CONC g torecover from the effects of an especially brutal and costly war. TheThirty Years War ha 2 CONC d been precipitated in part by the Palatine Elector,Frederick V, whose acceptance of the Bohe 2 CONC mian crown had proven disastrousto himself and to the Palatinate ("Palatinate" Encyclopedia B 2 CONC rittanicaOnline). 2 CONT At the end of the Thirty Years War, Mannheim was devastated. As Ruth P.Heidgerd wrote in he 2 CONC r preface to the new translation of the Mannheimrecords, the basis for this report: 2 CONT "The Peace of Westphalia in 1648 marked the end of the Thirty Years War.The Netherlands wer 2 CONC e granted political and religious liberty. Some of thenorthern provinces of France were cede 2 CONC d to the Hapsburg Empire, and thePalatinate was restoredto the hereditary Elector, Charles Lo 2 CONC uis. Hefound his commercial city of Mannheim a wasteland "with more wolves thanmen". By mean 2 CONC s of tax concessions, exemption from military service, etc.,he attracted many of the Hugueno 2 CONC t merchants and manufacturers of northernFrance to rebuild his city. 2 CONT Was Bourgon Broucard one of those who heeded the Palatine Elector's call? One cannot say exce 2 CONC pt to note that in 1648 our ancestor (b.abt. 1645) wasa very young man! 2 CONT What one can say on the basis of the present records from Mannheim isthat a Pierre Broucar 2 CONC t is reported in the records of the Mannheim churchat the baptism of his daughter, Catherine 2 CONC , on August 13, 1655, that therecords in total support the notion that the whatever the spell 2 CONC ing,BROUCART, BROUQUART, BROUCARD, etc., we are dealing with the members of asingle extende 2 CONC d family, and that Bourgon Broucard and his successivewives, Marie du May and Catherine le Fe 2 CONC bvre, were all bornin the LowCountry. 2 CONT Bourgon (spelled 'Gourgon') Broucard is recorded in his marriage withMarie du May (Decembe 2 CONC r 1, 1663) as "native of Moucron in the low country,Marie, as "native of Middlebourg in Zeela 2 CONC nd". In 1666-- the Plague Yearof Defoe which devastatedLondon--the plague also visited Mannhe 2 CONC im. Nodeath records exist from that time in Mannheim but it may be conjecturedthat the plagu 2 CONC e which decimated the Mannheim congregation also claimedpoor Marie du May and daughter. 2 CONT On December 18, 1666, Bourgon Broucard remarried for a second time, married that lady we al 2 CONC l claim as a distant mother, Catherine leFebvre--who is listed in the marriage record as "nat 2 CONC ive of Resterne inthe low country". 2 CONT There is much else in these records I received from the HuguenotHistorical Society Library a 2 CONC nd Archives, 86 Huguenot Street, New Paltz,NY 12561. Although this is copyrighted material i 2 CONC t is available fromHHSLA for a nominal fee upon request. I must extend my thanks to AsaCastle 2 CONC man who-- in one of those feats of serendipity for which he hasbecome notorious, stumbled acr 2 CONC oss the report stuck between the pages of abook in library and forwarded it to me! 2 CONT Just one more thing to say in closing. Bourgon Broucard had a brother,Rogier, also a membe 2 CONC r of the congregation at Mannheim. At Rogier'smarriage to Anne Bernard in the French Church o 2 CONC n January 7, 1657, Rogieris listed as "son of the late Louis Brouquart, during his life livin 2 CONC g atMouqueron in the low country". __________________________________________________________ 2 CONC __________________________ 2 CONT Bourgeon Broucard, a French Huguenot exile, who fled from France toGermany and came to Lon 2 CONC g Island in 1675. Soon after the Luther resistance to the Roman CatholicChurch, in Germa 2 CONC ny, there developed a religious pressure, in France, andit continued for several centuries. A 2 CONC fter the Edictof Nantes, issued byHenry 14 (Henry of Navarre), the Huguenots enjoyed consider 2 CONC able freedomof worship for a time, but during the latter part of the reign of Henry, and durin 2 CONC g several subsequent reigns, the privileges granted by theEdict, were finally withdrawn, in 1 2 CONC 685, and the Edict was revoked, andmost of the civil rights of the Huguenots were withdrawn 2 CONC . As a result ofthe increasing religious pressure many thousands of the French Huguenotslef 2 CONC t France and sought freedom in surrounding countries and in America. It was in the early 1660 2 CONC 's that Bourgon Broucard, before he was of twentyyears of age, sought religious freedom in Ma 2 CONC nheim, Germany, and there hewas affiliated with the Protestant branch of the Walloon Church 2 CONC . TheWalloons were remnants of the Belgae, or rather descendents of theancient Gauls, who rem 2 CONC ained in Southeast Belgium and near parts ofHolland and Germany. They were essentially Dutc 2 CONC h in religion, customs andculture, and it appears that the immigrants readily accepted the Du 2 CONC tchway of life. Following Henry Hudson's famous voyage, under t 2 CONC he Dutch flag, and thediscovery of the Hudson River, in 1614, the Dutch took possession of th 2 CONC eterritory of what is now New York, and named it New Amsterdam. Four Dutchgovernors were sen 2 CONC t to govern the territory and a stream of Dutchsettlers followed. The tenure of the Dutch, i 2 CONC n New Amsterdam, lasted only50 years, but the stream of settlers did not stop with the loss o 2 CONC f thecolony, but continued until the whole territory became almost a Dutchsettlement adequat 2 CONC e to maintain their customs and habits over a vastscope of the country around New York and su 2 CONC rrounding parts of New Jerseyand Pennsylvania. Needless to say that the Brokaw, etc., descend 2 CONC ents wereconstantly under the influence of the Dutchculture and maintained theirhabits for ma 2 CONC ny years until the whole swept under the leavening influenceof the "American Melting Pot," an 2 CONC d dropped their racial characteristics. For a little over twenty five years the family live 2 CONC d in the vicinity ofNew York, but in about 1702, all of the family, except one son, Isaac, mov 2 CONC ed to Somerset County, New Jersey. Isaac remained near the oldhomesite, in Brooklyn, and hi 2 CONC s descendents began to spell their names, asBragaw, and many of them still retain that spelli 2 CONC ng. The parents and therest of the family found homes on the Raritan and Millstone Rivers, in 2 CONC New Jersey. The New Jersey branch spelled the name as "Brokaw," and sincethen others have con 2 CONC verted to other ways of spelling, as Bercaw; Brocaw;Berkaw; etc., as you will find them in th 2 CONC is record. More than twentydifferent was of spelling were found in old records of New Jersey 2 CONC . In those times the French gave the sound of o or u to the dipthong ou andthe final dwas sil 2 CONC ent, so that the original pronunciation must have been"Brokar or Brucar." The r has been drop 2 CONC ped and a w substituted so thatthe pronunciation is not so remarkable for it's changes, for i 2 CONC tspersistency. The Huguenots, of France, became soldiers to protect their religion andcountry 2 CONC , and like other soldiers, of the times, adopted emblems known as'Armorial Bearings' or 'Coat 2 CONC s of Arms.' Such emblems were first used toidentify armored warriors on the battle fields. La 2 CONC ter, however, they became marks of honor, or distinction, and could beused by members of th 2 CONC e family, on civil occasions, and regulations becameso lax that their value was much impaired 2 CONC . There is evidence that somemembers of the Broucard and LeFebre adopted such emblems, but au 2 CONC thentic"Crests" have not been found. It is certain that Bourgon Broucard neverwas a soldier 2 CONC . We can assume that Bourgon was a militant man, from his connection withthe French Huguenots 2 CONC ; the Walloons, in Manheimand Holland and America;and, later, with the Dutch Church, and fro 2 CONC m further fact that most of theimmediate descendents in and around New York; Somerset County 2 CONC , New Jerseyand on into Pennsylvania, adhered to the Dutch Church for severalgenerations. An 2 CONC d for the same facts we can assume that he was a man ofcharacter and influence. The second ge 2 CONC neration of Brokaws was composed of eleven children, of whomfour were born in Manheim, German 2 CONC y, one in Amsterdam, Holland, and six inAmerica. When the move was made to New Jersey, five o 2 CONC f the family wentwith him; that is Jacob, Jan (John), Peter, Abraham and Catherine. Alarge tr 2 CONC act of land was purchased, by him and his son-in-law, JohnCoverson, and the second large colo 2 CONC ny of the family was started. Many oftheir descendents still live in and around Somerville, N 2 CONC ew Jersey, butmost of them have gone to other localities as will be seen as the storyunfolds 2 CONC . A third colony was developed in Eastern Ohio, where George Brokaw of thefourth generation s 2 CONC ettled neat Flushing, in about 1798, and there heraised a family of twelve children. He is No 2 CONC . 152-2 in the thisgenealogy. He had eight sons and each son reared a family. They were allfa 2 CONC rmers and lived on contiguous farms. For a time that community wasmostly of that family. Th 2 CONC e descendents of Bourgon Broucard are legion and from the originalplaces of settlement, her 2 CONC e n America, they have spread to all over thecountry. Ever Westward they movedand carried th 2 CONC e frontier with them, orfollowed closely behind. They carried the banners of Faith, Truth and 2 CONC industry wherever they went. In every war, from the first, in 1776, tothe latest wars, ther 2 CONC e have been many soldiers defending theircountryand it's honor. Few have attained wealth or f 2 CONC ame, as the world definesit, but the vast majority were men that farmed, "The backbone of the 2 CONC Nation," - tradesmen; business men'; teachers, etc., and numerousministers of the gospel. What one can say on the basis of the present records from Mannheim istha 2 CONC t a Pierre Broucart is reported in the records of the Mannheim churchat the baptism of his da 2 CONC ughter, Catherine, on August 13, 1655, that therecords in total support the notion that the w 2 CONC hatever the spelling,BROUCART, BROUQUART, BROUCARD, etc., we are dealing with the members o 2 CONC f asingle extended family, and that Bourgon Broucard and his successivewives, Marie du May an 2 CONC d Catherine le Febvre, were all bornin the LowCountry. Bourgon (spelled 'Gourgon') Broucard i 2 CONC s recorded in his marriage withMarie du May (December 1, 1663) as "native of Moucron in the l 2 CONC ow country,Marie, as "native of Middlebourg in Zeeland". In 1666-- the Plague Yearof Defoe wh 2 CONC ich devastatedLondon--the plague also visited Mannheim. Nodeath records exist from that tim 2 CONC e in Mannheim but it may be conjecturedthat the plague which decimated the Mannheim congregat 2 CONC ion also claimedpoor Marie du May and daughter. On December 18, 1666, Bourgon Broucard remarr 2 CONC ied for a second time, married that lady we all claim as a distant mother, Catherine leFebvre- 2 CONC -who is listed in the marriage record as "native of Resterne inthe low country". There is muc 2 CONC h else in these records I received from the HuguenotHistorical Society Library and Archives 2 CONC , 86 Huguenot Street, New Paltz,NY 12561. Although this is copyrighted material it is availab 2 CONC le fromHHSLA for a nominal fee upon request. I must extend my thanks to AsaCastleman who-- i 2 CONC n one of those feats of serendipity for which he hasbecome notorious, stumbled across the rep 2 CONC ort stuck between the pages of abook in library and forwardedit to me! Just one more thing t 2 CONC o say in closing. Bourgon Broucard had a brother,Rogier, also a member of the congregation a 2 CONC t Mannheim. At Rogier'smarriage to Anne Bernard in the French Church on January 7, 1657, Rogi 2 CONC eris listed as "son ofthe late Louis Brouquart, during his life living atMouqueron in the lo 2 CONC w country". _________________________________________________________________________________ 2 CONC ___ Bourgeon Broucard, a French Huguenot exile, who fled from France toGermany and came to Lo 2 CONC ng Island in 1675. He was a member of the Huguenot party, which was, during thesixteent 2 CONC h and seventeenth centuries, struggling to maintain Protestantismin that country. Soon afte 2 CONC r the Luther resistance to the Roman CatholicChurch, in Germany, there developed a religiou 2 CONC s pressure, in France, andit continued for several centuries. After the Edictof Nantes, issue 2 CONC d byHenry 14 (Henry ofNavarre), the Huguenots enjoyed considerable freedomof worship for a ti 2 CONC me, but during the latter part of the reign of Henry, and during several subsequent reigns, th 2 CONC e privileges granted by theEdict, were finally withdrawn, in 1685, and the Edict was revoked 2 CONC , andmost of the civil rights of the Huguenots were withdrawn. As a result ofthe increasing r 2 CONC eligious pressure many thousands of the French Huguenotsleft France and sought freedom in sur 2 CONC rounding countries and in America. Itwas in the early 1660's that Bourgon Broucard, before h 2 CONC e was of twentyyears of age, sought religious freedom in Manheim, Germany, and there hewas af 2 CONC filiated with the Protestant branch of the Walloon Church. TheWalloons were remnants of theBe 2 CONC lgae, or rather descendents of theancient Gauls, who remained in Southeast Belgium and near p 2 CONC arts ofHolland and Germany. They were essentially Dutch in religion, customs andculture, an 2 CONC d it appears that the immigrants readily accepted theDutchway of life. While in Manheim Bourg 2 CONC on Broucard married, 1st, to Marie DuMay and hadone child. Then he married, 2nd, to Catherin 2 CONC e LeFebre (LeFevre) and threemore children were born at Manheim. In the early 1670's he remov 2 CONC ed toAmsterdam,Holland, and there one more child was born. During the year of1675 he and fami 2 CONC ly removed to what is now Brooklyn, New York where heremained for more than twenty-five years 2 CONC . Following Henry Hudson's famous voyage, under the Dutch flag, andthediscovery of the Hudso 2 CONC n River, in 1614, the Dutch took possession of theterritory of what is now New York, and name 2 CONC d it New Amsterdam. Four Dutchgovernors were sent to govern the territory and a stream of Dut 2 CONC chsettlers followed. The tenure of the Dutch, in New Amsterdam, lasted only50 years, but th 2 CONC e stream of settlers did not stop with the loss of thecolony, but continued until the whole t 2 CONC erritory became almost a Dutchsettlement adequate to maintain their customs and habits ove 2 CONC r a vastscope of the country around New York and surrounding parts of New Jerseyand Pennsylva 2 CONC nia. Needless to say that the Brokaw, etc., descendents wereconstantly under the influence o 2 CONC f the Dutchculture and maintained theirhabits formany years until the whole swept under the l 2 CONC eavening influenceof the "American Melting Pot," and dropped their racial characteristics. Fo 2 CONC r a little over twenty five years the family lived in the vicinity ofNew York, but in about 1 2 CONC 702, all of the family, except one son, Isaac, moved to Somerset County, New Jersey. Isaac rem 2 CONC ained near the oldhomesite, in Brooklyn, and his descendents began to spell their names, asBr 2 CONC agaw, and many of them still retain that spelling. The parents and therest of the family foun 2 CONC d homes on the Raritan and Millstone Rivers, inNew Jersey. The New Jersey branch spelled th 2 CONC e name as "Brokaw," and sincethen others have converted to other ways of spelling, as Bercaw 2 CONC ; Brocaw;Berkaw; etc., as you will find them in this record. More than twentydifferent was o 2 CONC f spelling were found in old records of New Jersey. In those times the French gave the soun 2 CONC d of o or u to the dipthong ou andthe final dwas silent, so that the original pronunciation m 2 CONC ust have been"Brokar or Brucar." The r has been dropped and a w substituted so thatthe pronun 2 CONC ciation is not so remarkable for it's changes, for itspersistency. The Huguenots, of France 2 CONC , became soldiers to protect their religion andcountry, and like other soldiers, of the times 2 CONC , adopted emblems known as'Armorial Bearings' or 'Coats of Arms.' Such emblems were first use 2 CONC d toidentify armored warriors on the battle fields. Later, however, they became marks of hono 2 CONC r, or distinction, and could beused by members of the family, on civil occasions, and regulat 2 CONC ions becameso lax that their value was much impaired. There is evidence that somemembers of t 2 CONC he Broucard and LeFebre adopted such emblems, but authentic"Crests" have not been found. It i 2 CONC s certain that Bourgon Broucard neverwas a soldier. We can assume that Bourgon was a militan 2 CONC t man, from his connection withthe French Huguenots; the Walloons, in Manheimand Holland an 2 CONC d America;and, later, withthe Dutch Church, and from further fact that most of theimmediate d 2 CONC escendents in and around New York; Somerset County, New Jerseyand on into Pennsylvania, adher 2 CONC ed to the Dutch Church for severalgenerations. And for the same facts we can assume that he w 2 CONC as a man ofcharacter and influence. The second generation of Brokaws was composed of eleven c 2 CONC hildren, of whomfour were born in Manheim, Germany, one in Amsterdam, Holland, and six inAmer 2 CONC ica. When the move was made to New Jersey, five of the family wentwith him; that is Jacob, Ja 2 CONC n (John), Peter, Abraham and Catherine. Alarge tract of land was purchased, by him and his so 2 CONC n-in-law, JohnCoverson, and the second large colony of the family was started. Many oftheir d 2 CONC escendents still live in and around Somerville, New Jersey, butmost of them have gone to othe 2 CONC r localities as will be seen as the storyunfolds. A third colony was developed in Eastern Ohi 2 CONC o, where George Brokaw of thefourth generation settled neat Flushing, in about 1798, and ther 2 CONC e heraised a family of twelve children. He is No. 152-2 in the thisgenealogy. He had eight so 2 CONC ns and each son reared a family. They were allfarmers and lived on contiguous farms. For a ti 2 CONC me that communitywasmostly of that family. The descendents of Bourgon Broucard are legion an 2 CONC d from the originalplaces of settlement, here n America, they have spread to all over thecoun 2 CONC try. Ever Westward they movedand carried the frontier with them, orfollowed closely behind. T 2 CONC hey carried the banners of Faith, Truth andindustry wherever they went. In every war, from th 2 CONC e first, in 1776, tothe latest wars, there have been many soldiers defending theircountryan 2 CONC d it's honor. Few have attained wealth or fame, as the world definesit, but the vast majorit 2 CONC y were men that farmed, "The backbone of theNation," - tradesmen; business men'; teachers, et 2 CONC c., and numerousministers of the gospel. Mr. HaroldDuryee of Canton 2 CONC , Ohio, who has done much research on the Duryee-Duryeafamily, says that he isof the opinio 2 CONC n that the parents were Abraham andAntoinette, as in old Dutch family manner the parents name 2 CONC d theirchildren a lot after their parents.
